•Scandal in paradise
Is a 14-year-old teen simply the latest victim of an entrapment scam set up by Balinese authorities and their informants?

Is a fourteen-year-old Aussie boy simply the latest victim of a drug scam set up by Balinese authorities and their informants?

In an exclusive investigation, the scam by drug dealers and local police out to target Australians is uncovered.

On the streets of Bali you can find any drug you like, and if you're an Australian you are a Balinese drug dealer's number one target.

You don't need to go looking for it. In Bali drugs are pushed on you.

It's a lucrative business for the dealers, but what's even more lucrative is selling out Australians to the police.

Criminologist Dr Paul Wilson has studied Indonesia's drug scene and says evidence suggests police and dealers target unsuspecting tourists.

“All sorts of rouses and pressures are used, either by the police acting as drug sellers, or the genuine drug sellers to pressure people to try a drug,” Dr Wilson said.

The Indonesian police have said that taking drugs is a very serious offence, and they will use any method they can to catch people who take them. And using agent provocateurs - policemen pretending to be drug sellers - is a common procedure that’s used to catch people who want to buy drugs.

And that appears to be what has happened in the case of a fourteen-year-old schoolboy, who left his hotel room in Legian to get a massage accompanied by a friend. He was allegedly approached by a Balinese man, who apparently begged him to buy $25 worth of cannabis from him so he could afford to eat.

A transaction appears to have taken place, but what's not clear is whether the man that allegedly sold him the drugs was an undercover police officer or an informant. It does however seem that this was part of a police sting operation targeting tourists.

“Either the police agent provocateur or the genuine drug seller can put pressure on you. He can say ‘oh come on it's safe, everyone does it’, and if you're young like this kid was, you can fall into the trap of actually taking it,” Dr Wilson said.

Indonesia has some of the toughest drug laws in the world. The crime of trafficking is punishable by death, and there are extreme sentences for possession. It’s hard to say those laws are having any impact when you see how readily available drugs are on the streets.

The fourteen-year-old boy has been held at Polda police station, in the drug wing, where it is understood he was afforded his own room away from other inmates.

His parents are also believed to have spent the night with him, and his lawyers were working hard to send a counsellor or a psychologist in to see him.

The boy’s parents have engaged local solicitor Mohammad Rifan, who

The boy is yet to be charged, but if found guilty he could face up to twelve years in prison. Though traditionally minors have their sentenced halved.

As a minor police can only hold him for 30 days without charge, as opposed to the usual 90 days. Any sentence could also be further reduced if a claim of drug addiction is made.

Regardless even though the boy is just fourteen, if he is found guilty he will have to spend any sentence inside the infamous Kerobokan prison, home to Schappelle Corby and the Bali Nine.

Expatriates in Bali are aware of the problem of targeting, saying that many dealers wait at the Jetstar airport carousels and follow Aussie holidaymakers before attempting the setups.

In some cases travellers say they are ordered to hand over money or they will be set up. They say authorities handpick their Australian targets, seizing their luggage at the carousels and using Schapelle Corby as an example of what happens to those who don't pay up.
