You are selfish, senior doctor tells old mums

Selfish older mothers
Women who plan to get pregnant after they reach their late 30s are selfish and self-centred, a leading obstetric physician says.
Dr Barry Walters, an obstetrician at King Edward Memorial Hospital, said yesterday that people who delayed having children that long were unfairly leaving their offspring to deal with geriatric parents by the time they reached their teens and early 20s.
He said the number of older expectant mothers coming into the hospital had become an epidemic and this led to far more pregnant women and babies with medical problems.
"I see many, many women with diabetes, high blood pressure and all sorts of medical problems and, of course, the older the woman is, the more likely she's got medical problems," he said.
"There are far more women over the age of 38 getting pregnant than there ever were 10, 20 years ago.
"The medical side is only part of it. It is selfish and self-centred of older women to have babies because they are not just babies - they are babies for a little while and they become people." The average age of women giving birth in WA was 29.6 years last year.
The proportion of women giving birth aged 35 or older has steadily increased every year, from 4.7 per cent in 1980 to 21.5 per cent in 2008.
"They (their children) are starting out in life, having a family, working, getting mortgages and have to deal with geriatric parents," he said. "It's just not fair."
Dr Walters said more than 700 pregnant women with medical problems were referred to the hospital's obstetric medical clinic last year.
"There are more and more older women, more obese women, more unfit women, women with medical problems and they are bloody hard work and they don't do so well in pregnancy," he said.
"I'm looking at 20 years down the track. We've got 20 year olds with mothers who have had heart attacks, strokes and are on dialysis for kidney failure for diabetes."
"Older mother" Julie Hosking, who had her daughter Maya four years ago at the age of 41, said she did not doubt Dr Walters' medical reasons but criticised his social argument.
"I don't believe there is a perfect age to have a child," she said.
"I can tell you there are challenges for every age and stage."
Dr Walters also blasted some intro-vitro fertilisation practitioners for enabling older women to get pregnant.
"They are unethical and money-grabbing," he said.
He advised women to have their children by the time they were 37 and to have a medical check-up and be a healthy weight before they got pregnant.
