For the first time in eight decades, a Nobel Peace laureate has died in state captivity: Liver cancer took the life of Chinese democracy activist Liu Xiaobo at 61.

He’d been granted “medical parole” from prison last month, only to be hospitalized under armed guard and prevented from seeking treatment overseas.

His last prison stretch began in late 2009, for the “crime” of staging a public protest. That was his fourth sentence for “subversion,” going back to his time as a leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

Liu was serving an 11-year sentence for a protest he staged in 2008 when he was diagnosed with late-stage cancer in May. German and American doctors examined him and pronounced him fit to travel, but Beijing insisted he wasn’t well enough to leave the country.

He was awarded the Peace Prize in 2010, one of the more inspired selections. His government refused to even allow him to name someone to accept it in his place — just as the Hitler regime had denied 1935 Peace laureate Carl von Ossietzky.

China’s government, in short, has joined Nazi Germany in the record books.
