(NEW YORK) -- The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously approved a probe into the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
The 15-member body requested the establishment of a joint investigation into who is responsible for the use of chemical weapons. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in coordination with the Director-General for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will be expected to submit recommendations for the probe within three weeks. The two organizations worked together in the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles and production facilities last year.
The probe will be tasked with identifying "individuals, entities, groups or governments involved in the use of chemicals as weapons, including chlorine or any other toxic chemical," the U.N. says.
The Secretary-General welcomed the probe, calling the use of toxic chemical weapons unacceptable and calling for those responsible to be held accountable in a statement.
Earlier this year, the U.N. Security Council had expressed concern about the use of chemicals, particularly chlorine, within Syria.
