Suspected ISIS Suicide Bomber Leaves 30 Dead in Turkey-Syria Border Town

At least 30 people are dead and 100 wounded after a suicide bombing Monday in Suruc, Turkey, a town on the Syrian-Turkish border that is six miles from Kobani, a longtime Islaimc State stronghold that was reclaimed by liberation forces.

The suicide bomber was thought to be a member of the terrorist organization. According to Reuters, a local newspaper identified the bomber as an 18-year-old woman but authorities have not confirmed this description nor commented on the bomber's identity.

The bomber targeted a press conference held by activists from local universities. The activists were planning a trip to Kobani to help with reconstruction efforts.

Speaking by phone with Reuters, a witness identified only as Mehmet said the incident was a "huge explosion.... We all shook,"

A video circulating online shows activists holding a banner and flags before the explosion is seen at the event.

National Security Council spokesman Ned Price said in a statement: "The United States strongly condemns today’s heinous terrorist attack in Suruç, Turkey. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims, many of whom had come to Suruç to assist reconstruction efforts in Kobani. We also express our solidarity with the Turkish government and people and reaffirm our undeterred resolve to work with Turkey and other partners to combat the shared threat of terrorism."
