Airstrikes target Islamic State oil facilities in Syria

WASHINGTON — Airstrikes in Syria shifted from the besieged city of Kobani toward the oil facilities that fund Islamic State fighters who have seized portions of Syria and neighboring Iraq, the military announced Saturday.
Two airstrikes were conducted near Kobani compared with six announced Friday and 14 in and around the city Thursday, according to U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East.
Fighters and bombers instead focused their firepower on oil refineries and collection points, conducting 11 bombing runs on sites across Syria.
The focus on economic targets under the control of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, fits with the strategy that Army Gen. Lloyd Austin laid out Friday.
Austin, who leads Central Command, told reporters that starving ISIL of funds from oil will sap its ability to control and fight against Iraqi security forces.
"By striking these types of facilities, we reduce their ability to generate the funds and the fuel required to sustain their operations," Austin said. "And we are having the desired effects."
Airstrikes in Iraq on Saturday appeared to be in support of Iraqi troops moving toward ISIL fighters in Bayji, north of Baghdad. Iraqi security forces are fighting their way toward Bayji, seeking to relieve troops defending the town, Austin said.
On Saturday, five airstrikes near south and west of Bayji targeted ISIL fighters, buildings, vehicles and weapons, according to Central Command.
