Escalating war on ISIL: Opinionline

What people are saying about U.S. actions in Syria and the rest of the Middle East.

Fareed Zakaria, The Washington Post: "Having declared that the aim of U.S. policy is to 'degrade and ultimately destroy' the Islamic State, President Obama now finds himself pressured to escalate military action in Syria. This is a path destined for failure. The administration should ... make clear that it is focused on a strategy against ISIL that is actually achievable: containment. Escalation in Syria cannot meet American objectives."
Leslie H. Gelb, The Daily Beast: "The United States (must) work with Bashar Assad's Syria, and with Iran (because they) can and would provide plausible ground forces in short order. ... Iran and Assad's Syria could emerge from this anti-jihadi alliance with much more power in the Middle East and beyond. No one needs to be reminded that the men in charge in Damascus and Tehran are really nasty guys. At the end of the day, however, both have been mainly self-protective powers. Assad has been more of a threat to his own people than to his neighborhood."
K.T. McFarland, Fox News: "The as-yet unformed moderate Syrian rebel army is a long way off, and in all likelihood a fantasy. ... The president and his advisers keep saying this will take a long time to win, but time is running out. Let's face reality. The old Iraq no longer exists. The old Syria no longer exists. ... Ten years ago we didn't have a lot of options. We needed Arab oil. ... We needed the Middle East more than it needed us. Now the situation is reversed."
Dina Badie, The Huffington Post: "Working with 'moderate' Syrian rebels ... is counterproductive. Just because it is already our policy doesn't mean that it's a good one. These rebels are fighting both ISIL and the Assad regime, who is also fighting ISIL. Why undermine the Syrian military's ability to target ISIL? ... Eliminating ISIL would be a personal victory (for Assad). If anything, it would give the U.S. a little more clout in that we helped to defeat one of Assad's enemies."
Sheldon Richman, Reason: "They are doing it again. 'They' are the war-party politicians, Democrats and Republicans. 'It' is scaring you into supporting another war in the Middle East. When will the American people learn? If in a republic, the people are the ultimate check on government power, a gullible, easily frightened public is a disaster waiting to happen. ... The best way to avoid terrorism is to stop dropping bombs on Muslims."
