The West must hold Assad to account for his regime's chlorine attacks

The Telegraph's investigation proving that the Assad regime is routinely using chlorine bombs against Syria's civilian population must serve as a wake up call to the West that it can no longer ignore a brutal conflict that has so far cost an estimated 150,000 lives.

Because of the recent international crisis over Ukraine, Syria has fallen off the news agenda in recent months. Trying to make sure Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn't invade eastern Ukraine has been the top priority for Western politicians, which has meant that little attention has been paid to the Syrian conflict.

Freed from the spotlight of international scrutiny, the Assad regime has consequently been given free rein to indulge in brutal tactics aimed at defeating the rebels – including the use of home-made chemical weapons.

For, as our correspondent Ruth Sherlock has discovered following her painstaking investigation in Syria's Idlib province, the Assad regime is routinely using home-made bombs comprising chlorine and ammonia, which have the effect of killing its victims by asphyxiation.

The use of such weapons is a clear breach of the Geneva Protocol signed at the end of the First World War – of which Syria is a signatory – which bans the use of "asphyxiating, poisonous and other gases" on the battlefield.

More to the point, it makes a mockery of the deal Damascus signed at the end of last summer to hand over its chemical weapons after America and Britain threatened to bomb the Assad regime in response to its chemical weapons attack on the outskirts of Damascus in August which killed an estimated 1,400 people.

Clearly, as our report shows, the Assad regime is still using these banned weapons, which is an inconvenient truth our politicians simply cannot ignore. Rather than turning a blind eye to the Syrian conflict, the Assad regime's continued use of chemical weapons should remind Western policymakers that they ignore Syria's bloody civil war at their peril.
