Obama’s tragic farce
It's all talk, no peace in Syria

Going nowhere fast
The farce playing out in the talks aimed at ending Syria’s bloody civil makes clear that President Obama has squandered whatever leverage the U.S. had in the region.
Syrian President Bashar Assad is openly uninterested in a deal that entails surrendering power. Representatives of his secular opposition reluctantly agreed to come to the table only after Secretary of State John Kerry threatened to cut off America’s already limited aid. And the now-dominant Islamist jihadists, many with ties to Al Qaeda, are simply ignoring the talks. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited Iran to join negotiations, then took back the invitation. The Russians are there, standing squarely behind Assad.
Against this backdrop, Syria’s foreign minister, Bashar Jaafari, open the proceedings by declaring that the rebels “evil” terrorists engaged in “sexual jihad.” Kerry in turn called Assad a “one-man super-magnet for terrorism” who must step down.
There was a time when a blunt declaration from America’s top statesman would carry a credible threat of action. But that moment passed when Assad crossed Obama’s chemical weapons red line with no real consequences.
Asked what the U.S. might do in response to graphic pictures documenting widespread torture of prisoners by the Syrian regime, Kerry muttered about wanting a UN investigation, and about how support for the rebels had been or would be “augmented.” Right.
Speaking of Iran, its foreign minister, also in Switzerland, defiantly said Iranians “did not agree to dismantle anything” in the much-ballyhooed negotiations Obama says are aimed at ending the country’s nuclear weapons program.
Saturday, low-ranking Syrian officials sat in the same room as opposition officials or the first time — though neither side would speak to the other. Everyone is getting nowhere fast — except for Iran and Assad, who, with help from Iran’s elite Quds force and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia, has consolidated power and keeps killing.
They are talking the Syrians to death, literally.
