Assad’s barbarism goes on unabated
Surrender of chemical weapons cannot let the Syrian leader off the hook
Last month, the US and Russia signed a deal in Geneva forcing the Assad regime in Syria to surrender its chemical weapons for destruction. This week, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the body entrusted with managing the project, gave a positive assessment of progress. The OPCW has visited 21 of the 23 chemical weapons sites identified by Syria. It will destroy the equipment at those sites next month. The US is “optimistic” about how the process is going.
