Libya emails fingered terrorist group on 9/11

Debra J. Saunders

I share the frustration of readers who want to see more coverage on the Benghazi attack and probable coverup and less of the ”binders,” “bayonets” and other silly stories masquerading as news during this election season.

Meanwhile, there’s a real story developing. A number of news organizations have reported on new emails which you can read here. These e-mails provide more evidence that the White House understood that organized terrorists were behind the 9/11 attack on the Benghazi mission even as members of the administration continued to blame a video produced in America for the attack that left four Americans dead.

Libya emails sent on 9/11

As CBS reports, At 6:07 p.m. of Sept. 11, 2012, State sent out an alert saying the embassy in Tripoli reported the Islamic military group “Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibilty for Benghazi Attack”… “on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli.”

So why did Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice go on ABC’s “This Week,” the following Sunday and say that the attacked was not “pre-planned.” And: “We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people came to … the consulate … to replicate the sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo. “And then as that unfolded, it seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons.” Clearly the administration preferred blaming a video produced in America for the attack than terrorists with guns in Libya.

I wrote on this controversy on Sept. 17 and on Sept. 12. I criticized the Obama administration for blaming a video and downplaying the likely terrorist role. (Duh. It was 9/11 and Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri had released a video calling on Islamists to avenge the death of a Libyan-born cleric killed in a U.S. drone attack.) The news I’ve seen since then back up the points I made in September.

At the second presidential debate, President Obama scored points when he reminded Mitt Romney that he included the words “act of terrors” in his 9/12 Rose Garden remarks. Romney misspoke and Obama deftly capitalized on that mistake. The fact remains that the Obama administration spent the two weeks after the Benghazi attack spreading bad information, as CNN’s Candy Crowley noted.
