Tunisia has arrested a 28-year-old man reportedly linked to the US consulate attack in Libya which killed US Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

A spokesman for the country’s Interior Ministry announced that Ali Harzi, a Tunisian, was in custody but refused to elaborate on any details of the arrest.

Mr Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Benghazi assault on September 11.

The subsequent handling of the tragedy by the Obama administration has been the subject of widespread debate in the build up to the November 6 election.

Senior Republicans have repeatedly accused the president of misleading the public over the attacks in order to protect his record on neutralising al-Qaeda.

Mr Obama has ultimately acknowledged that the incident was a "terrorist" attack carried out by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathisers.

Initially, however, there was confusion over the deaths, with officials believing the attack was triggered by the release of a controversial anti-Muslim video made in California that insulted the Prophet Mohammad, rather than by terrorist insurgents.

This week, official emails obtained by Reuters showed that both the White House and State Department were advised two hours after the attacks that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the assault.

By the morning of Sept. 12, the emails revealed there were indications that members of both Ansar al-Sharia, a militia based in the Benghazi area, and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African affiliate of al-Qaida's faltering central command, may have been involved in organising the attacks.

Earlier this month, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said America had been looking into the arrests of two Tunisian men being detained in Turkey, reportedly in connection with the Libyan consulate attack. The State Department today refused to comment on the arrest.
