US Election 2012: America at crossroads as it gets set to vote

Channel 4's Washington correspondent Matt Frei on the battle for the White House

It's neck and neck: Obama and Romney

America is at a crossroads and this year’s Presidential election is about how to reboot a disillusioned nation suffering a prolonged sugar low.

The country is divided ahead of the November 6 vote and the candidates are neck and neck because there is no consensus about the best solution.

Mitt Romney is offering less government, lower taxes, some cuts but also more military spending.

The numbers don’t add up. But, because of his past as a successful businessman, his reputation as a fixer and because of disappointment with Obama, at least 48 per cent of the country are prepared to give Mitt a shot.

If he wins, which for now is at least a toss-up, the moment that his robotic campaign got a racing pulse will be dated back to the first TV debate in Denver.

The other 48 per cent will stick with Obama because they believe he feels their pain and because they believe his medicine deserves more time to work.

They’re not completely convinced that Obama can deliver but, like a marriage in trouble, they are prepared to stay together... for the sake of the kids.

So both candidates are met with mild enthusiasm and both have replaced hope and change with fear and loathing. Mitt wants Americans to fear Obama’s supposedly Socialist agenda.

“He will turn America into the worst of what Europe has become,” Romney likes to say about the President.

Obama, who had just a 2 per cent lead in the latest poll last night, tells the nation that Romney is an unreconstructed vulture capitalist exploiter who will soak the poor and spoil the rich. Both views are nonsense of course. In terms of their temperament Obama and Romney are actually quite similar ... results-driven, professorial pragmatists who both studied law at Harvard, distrust people outside their narrow circle and feel like outsiders.

One is an African American. The other is a Mormon.

There has never been an election like it. From relations with China to Iran to the Arab Spring to the revival of the global economy, this election comes at a delicate historical juncture.

It will have enormous impact. It will be watched by the world and it will probably be decided by a few thousand voters in the swing states of Ohio, Virginia and Florida. Very local politics gone global.

- Matt Frei presents The American Road Trip: Obama’s Story which airs tonight on Channel 4 at 7pm.
