US election 2012: Barack Obama and Mitt Romney tie in the polls

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are locked in a tie as the US presidential election campaign enters its final fortnight.

An NBC/WSJ poll on Sunday put national support for both candidates at 47 per cent, after Mr Romney closed a three-point lead held by the president in the survey before their first debate.

The candidates are also neck and neck in an average of national polls by RealClearPolitics.

While Mr Obama holds a slim lead in most of the 10 battleground states that are likely to decide the split in the electoral college in the November 6 election, his Republican challenger is close behind.

A poll of Ohio by PPP, a Left-leaning pollster, found the president's lead cut from four points to one in two weeks. Ohio is seen as the likeliest "tipping point" state, where a win would mean overall victory.

David Axelrod, Mr Obama's top strategist, tried to ease Democratic nerves by pointing to the president's apparent advantage among ballots already cast.

"We feel we're even or ahead in these battleground states," he told NBC's Meet The Press. "If you look at the early voting that's going on around the country, it's very robust and it's very favourable to us. And we think that's a better indicator than these public polls."
