As the world zoomed in on North Korea’s failed rocket launch Friday morning, South Koreans generally brushed off the event as they tend to do when the North grabs the headlines.
But the discussion online illustrated some of the frustration and fatigue with North Korea felt in the South.
Daum, the country’s second biggest portal site, opened a discussion page about the launch.
Here’s a selection of some of the posts:
“The money that was sent by (former presidents) Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun is shred into pieces in the air… We should take this opportunity to send all the North Korean sympathizers (in the South) to the North.”
“Thanks, we enjoyed your 800 billion won worth of fireworks.”
“The North Korean regime went nuts. Their people are starving to death and the regime is sending money into outer space. Maybe they have something in common with our government. We (South Koreans) are economically suffering but the government is throwing huge amounts of money into the river.” (this is directed at President Lee Myung-bak’s huge construction project to restore rivers)
“Pyongyang should buy their own food. They have money – a lot.”
“Since it is now confirmed that North Korea doesn’t have the technology for its rocket to reach other continents, countries far away must feel relieved, but for the Korean peninsula the nuclear threat is still valid. So for us, whether the launch fails or not doesn’t matter.”
The following comment is perhaps one of the best at showing just how the general public feels about the news and illustrates how South Koreans have become numb to North Korea’s belligerence.
“Please stop. It is not a direct threat. We don’t give a (expletive). It is not like the little Kim is driving a tank down here. What is all the fuss about?”
