THE Norwegian mass killer responsible for killing 77 people last July today admitted carrying out the attacks but pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he was acting in self-defence, during the first day of his trial in Oslo.
"I acknowledge the acts, but not criminal guilt, and I claim legitimate defence," Anders Behring Breivik told the court.
Breivik, who killed eight people by detonating a bomb in Oslo and a further 69 during a shooting spree on young people attending a political youth camp on nearby Utoya island, is charged with terrorism, but he believes the attacks were a political act designed to prevent Norway from being taken over by Muslims.
As he entered the courtroom, Breivik made a far-right salute before lead judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen opened the proceedings.

Breivik then told Arntzen he did not recognise the court, as it supports multiculturalism, and he also objected to her as judge. When asked if he was unemployed, Breivik said he was a writer and worked from prison.
Breivik showed no emotion as prosecutors read out the names of his victims and chilling details about their horrific injuries and deaths.
Prosecutor Svein Holden then told the court that before the massacre, Breivik made money by selling false diplomas and also played the online game World of Warcraft extensively. Breivik grinned in court as details of his gaming habits were read out.
Holden gave details of Breivik's involvement with the "Knights Templar" network, a far-right militant group the killer claims to be a member of but which prosecutors say does not exist.
Breivik looked pleased as a photo of himself in "Knights Templar" dress uniform was shown to the court and then appeared to well up with tears when his own anti-Islamic propaganda video was shown.
The court also heard details about the explosives used in the attack.

After a break for lunch, the court was shown CCTV footage of the July 22 bombing in Oslo.
Breivik appeared to suppress a smile as he watched footage of himself parking a van loaded with a homemade bomb outside the government buildings and then walking away in a fake police uniform to a getaway car.
Despite cries and gasps from people in the courtroom, Breivik remained stony-faced as video of the actual explosion and its aftermath - deemed unsuitable for television broadcast - was shown in court.
The trial is expected to last 10 weeks and is taking place before a panel of five judges.
Breivik, who wants to be found sane and accountable for his actions, is due to take to the stand again tomorrow.
If he is found sane, he faces just 21 years in prison, although the sentence may be extended if he is considered a threat to society. If he is found insane, he could spend the rest of his life on a closed psychiatric ward.
