Anders Behring Breivik on Tuesday defended his massacre of 77 people, insisting he would do it again and calling the bomb-and-shooting rampage the most “spectacular” attack by a nationalist militant since World War II.

Reading a prepared statement in court, the anti-Muslim extremist lashed out at Norwegian and European governments for embracing immigration and multiculturalism.

He claimed to be speaking as a commander of an “anti-communist” resistance movement and an anti-Islam militant group he called the Knights Templar. Prosecutors have said the group does not exist.

Maintaining he acted out of “goodness not evil” to prevent a wider civil war, Mr. Breivik vowed, “I would have done it again.”

Mr. Breivik's testimony Tuesday was delayed after a citizen judge was dismissed for his comments online the day following the July 22 attack that Mr. Breivik deserves the death penalty. Lawyers on all sides had requested that lay judge Thomas Indreboe be taken off the trial.

He was replaced by backup lay judge Elisabeth Wisloeff.

Mr. Breivik is being tried by a panel of two professional judges and three lay judges, local politicians who are appointed for four-year terms and participate on an equal basis as the judges in deciding guilt and sentencing. The system is designed to let ordinary people have a role in the Norwegian justice system, though the lead judge still runs the trial.

As at the start of the trial on Monday, Mr. Breivik entered the court smirking before flashing a clenched-fist salute.

Mr. Breivik has five days to explain why he set off a bomb in Oslo's government district, killing eight, and then gunned down 69 at a Labour Party youth camp outside the Norwegian capital. He denies criminal guilt saying he was acting in self-defence.

Survivors of the massacre have worried he will use his testimony as a platform to promote his extremist views. The key issue for the court to decide is whether Mr. Breivik is psychotic.

Judge Wenche Elisabeth Arntzen repeatedly interrupted Mr. Breivik asking him to keep his statement short.

“It is critically important that I can explain the reason and the motive” for the massacre, Mr. Breivik said.

He said he acted in self-defence to protect Norway from Muslims by attacking the left-leaning political party he blamed for the country's liberal immigration policies.

According to Mr. Breivik, Western Europe was gradually taken over by “Marxists and multiculturalists” after World War II, because it didn't have “anti-communist” leaders like U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy. The senator dominated the early 1950s by his sensational but unproved charges of Communist subversion in high government circles in the U.S.

His probes gave rise to the term McCarthyism, which describes the persecution of innocent persons on the charge of being Communists.

“But even McCarthy was too moderate,” Mr. Breivik said.

On Monday, Mr. Breivik rejected the authority of the court, calling it a vehicle of the “multiculturalist” political parties in power in Norway. He confessed to the “acts” but pleaded not guilty.

Even his lawyers concede his defence is unlikely to succeed, and said the main thing for them was to convince the court that Mr. Breivik is not insane.

One psychiatric examination found him legally insane while another reached the opposite conclusion. It is up to the panel to decide whether to send him to prison or compulsory psychiatric care.

Mr. Breivik could face a maximum 21-year prison sentence or an alternate custody arrangement that would keep him locked up as long as he is considered a menace to society.

"Law judge in Norway massacre case for death penalty comment" - can the G&M editors not come up with titles both concise and comprehensible? Also, the first line of the article says 'lay' judge. I think there's a typo in the title. How about: Norwegian judge dismissed for endorsing death penalty for Brevik.

The correct term is lay judge. Consider them either not profession judges or those who aren't trained in law. However, the definition is dependent on the jurisdiction.

eddant,

The title originally said "law judge" as I quoted it in my comment, not "lay judge". I meant to suggest that it should be lay judge, and law judge was a typo. The editors have since edited it at least three times, once to say 'lay judge' and add the word dismissed. I see now it says "Breivik on Norway massacre: 'I would have done it again'".

The title of this piece looks like it's just random words grabbed from the article.

I think I'm going to be sick.

But I think we should all reflect upon his twisted worldview. He represents the extreme of a dangerous form of conservatism that's taking hold in parts of Europe - just google Geert Wilders.

We can even see traces of his rhetoric in the US and the "Obama is a secret muslim" crowd. At least Canadian conservatives maintain a tenuous grasp on tolerance and decency.

It may be hard, but we need to hear what he is going to say. We need to see the face of evil in order to understand it.

Lay judge: 'citizens who are appointed for four-year terms and participate on an equal basis'

Great idea!
Imagine, citizens actually participating in the process rather than just showing up every few years to "vote" for some ruling class scoundrel or other?

Seems to have baffled the illiterates, though...?

Please explain the headline "Law judge in Norway massacre case for death penalty comment".If you have to read a headline twice to understand it, it's poorly written; this is off the charts. Do you miss your style editor? I do.

e commited a crime and he will get a term in prison.....as for his theory about danger of muslim take over in Europe in several decades (and so anihilation of European culture and freedoms) - in that he is ofcource right...and yes, liberal multiculturalists are indeed traitors of Norway and European civilisation and in long term they are traitors of democracy and freedoms too (because muslim doctrine doesn't give place for democracy and freedoms) - but it doesn't mean that he was right to kill kids - he certanly commited a crime - but it doesn't mean that European governmnets that facilitated influx of millions of not-willing and not-able to assimilate muslims into EU are not guilty as well...they are both guilty in this situation - Breivik and European multiculturalist-traitors- actually not only Breivik should be locked in prison for that, but his oponents in the Government as well - as for muslims, they are not guilty - they are what they are (and Breivik say it himself) - those who permit their influx into EU are guilty.

or posters who don't know what a lay judge is, and who assumed there's a typo in the headline, here's the explanation from Wikipedia:

"In criminal cases where the crime is punishable by no more than six years in prison, the court consists of three professional judges and four lay judges; all seven have equal votes in the decisions. In order to convict, five of the seven judges must vote for conviction.

Lay judges are members of the public without legal qualifications, that are appointed for periods of four years by the city and county councils."

One thing is for sure, Breivik is making a mockery of the Norwegian justice system. Perhaps laws need to be amended for mass-murderers.

o, he doesn't want attention - his motivation is absolutelly different and absolutelly clear from his "Manifesto" and even from this article if you bother to read it before posting your comments - posting commnets for an article without reading it is indeed to seek attention - in case of Breivik situation is waaaaay diferent...and ofcource I condemn his crime, but I am sure that such atitude like of posters above who don't bother to try to understand his motivation will guarantee repeating of the same by others and maybe indeed a civil war in future
