Barack Obama has a big day ahead as he addresses parliament and visits the war memorial before heading north.
US President Barack Obama will address federal parliament on Thursday before heading to Darwin for a brief visit to wrap up his whirlwind Australian tour Down Under.
After a warm reception in Canberra on Wednesday, Mr Obama is due to attend a wreath laying at the Australian War Memorial on Thursday morning.
Senators and members of the House of Representatives will pour into Parliament House to hear Mr Obama's address mid-morning, after the president has a meeting with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.
The focus will then be on education, with a visit to a local primary school by Mr Obama andPrime Minister Julia Gillard.
The strengthening of the ANZUS alliance and its 60th anniversary are expected to be highlighted further in the presidential speech, along with a steely resolve to finish the task ahead in Afghanistan.
There will also be a tree planting ceremony at the US embassy to mark the president's visit.
Mr Obama will then jet off aboard Air Force One to Darwin, where he will visit the memorial of the USS Peary, which honours the 80 American sailors killed when the warship was bombed by Japanese dive bombers in the 1942 attacks on the port.
A defence event with troops at the Darwin Royal Australian Air Force base, where US Marines will start to deploy on a rotational basis from mid-2012, is last on the agenda for the president.
Air Force One will then take Mr Obama to Bali for the East Asia Summit, capping off a hectic week of regional talks which began with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu.
