The tables are set, the lawns are mown and the security is in place. Canberra is ready to welcome the leader of the free world.

American President Barack Obama will arrive in Australia at about 3.30pm (AEDT) on Wednesday, touching down at the Fairbairn base where the Queen landed just four weeks ago.

He will then head to Parliament House, where there will be a perimeter lockdown, for an official welcome ceremony involving the Federation Guard and band.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher will be among those welcoming Mr Obama on his first visit Down Under.

The president's wife, Michelle, and children won't be accompanying him for this trip, the US embassy in Canberra said on Twitter.

Ms Gillard expected the president would find a warm welcome.

"Australians feel warmly and deeply about the United States, our links as nations ... are deep and I think Australians feel a sense of connection and affection for Americans," she told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

However, several rallies are planned for outside Parliament House during the president's visit, although it's unclear how close protesters will be able to get.

After the ceremony, Mr Obama will sign the parliamentary visitor's book in the Marble Hall.

He's expected to draw a big crowd with parliamentary staff invited to watch - although no member of the public will be allowed entry.

Then Mr Obama and Ms Gillard will hold bilateral talks for about an hour, followed by a press conference with Australian and American journalists.

Australia's Ambassador to the US and former Labor leader Kim Beazley said the pair had a very good personal relationship.

"They seem to make some play of their mutual birth year of 1961, they see themselves as both very much of the same generation," Mr Beazley told ABC TV.

"I know that the president has had a very strong appreciation of what he sees as steadfastness on the part of Julia Gillard on Afghanistan."

Later on Wednesday evening a dinner will be held in the president's honour in parliament's Great Hall.

Mr Obama, Ms Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott are to give speeches.

The president has another busy day planned for Thursday, the second of his lightning 26-hour visit.
