Johnson Rejects Senate-Passed DHS Bill, Says House Will Vote on Stopgap Plan Instead

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said on March 27 he is putting forth a short-term bill to fund all of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for 60 days, instead of the Senate-passed measure to fund most of DHS except its immigration enforcement operations.
“This gambit that was done last night is a joke. I’m quite convinced that it can’t be that every Senate Republican read the language of this bill,” he told reporters.
“We’re not doing that,” he added.
The House measure is unlikely to attract Democratic support in either the House or Senate, which would prolong the DHS shutdown that has lasted almost six weeks. Democrats are opposed to funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without significant reforms.

Austria’s government on March 27 said it plans to introduce a ban on social media for under-14s, citing concerns over child safety, addiction, and cyberbullying.
Social media “exacerbates distractions and concentration problems, while personalized advertising and algorithmic content increase the pressure on young people,” the federal government said in a statement.
When the plans will take effect was not immediately clear, but the government said that legislation will be drafted by the end of June.
“We will decisively protect children and young people in future from the negative effects of social media,” Austrian Vice Chancellor and Media Minister Andreas Babler said.

The United States can achieve all of its objectives in the Iran war without sending troops to the country to fight a ground war, and the military operation won’t be a prolonged one, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday.
Following a meeting with the Group of Seven nations, or G7, in France, Rubio spoke to reporters who asked about further U.S. troop deployment in the Middle East and whether the conflict would be drawn out.
“This is not going to be a prolonged conflict,” he said, adding that the Trump administration has “been as clear as you can possibly be” about the war’s objectives since the start. The U.S. military is going to “destroy their factories that make missiles, rockets, and drones,” the Iranian military’s navy, missile launchers, and air force, Rubio added.
“We are achieving all of those objectives, and we are ahead of schedule on most of them,” Rubio said. “And we can achieve them without any ground force.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said on March 26 that Iran had given the United States a “present” in the form of several boats carrying oil.
To show that they were serious and reliable, Iran had planned to send more than eight large vessels of oil, he said. He initially thought nothing of it, but then he saw a news report stating that eight ships were moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump, speaking during a Cabinet meeting, reiterated that his administration is having “very substantial talks” with Tehran to resolve the conflict.
Iranian officials gifted the United States 10 boats of crude oil to show that they were “real and solid” during negotiations, he said.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a key voice in the Trump administration’s explanation of the decision to launch Operation Epic Fury, reiterated why Iran poses a direct threat to the United States and its citizens, and why the strike was not only justified but necessary to protect Americans.

"The most important job any president has is to keep the American people safe. And every president says it, but we have a president that means it and does something about it. As the president outlined very clearly to the world on the night this operation began, Iran has been at war with the United States for 47 years," Rubio said. "For 47 years, Iran has been killing Americans and attacking Americans across this planet. And now the president's had an opportunity to do something about it. And they all warned about how Iran was dangerous, but they refused to act."
"And this president's not someone that's going to refuse to act. He's not going to leave a danger like this in place. He's going to address it, and that is what he is doing," the Secretary of State continued.
He went on to explain that the Iranian regime is at its weakest point, as they have taken to attacking public infrastructure and embassies rather than military targets. In other words, what the world is watching is hopefully the last breath of a regime that has caused so much instability in its region and around the world.

Trump Doesn't Flip-Flop; He Maintains Control
For decades, American presidents have struggled with one of the most difficult challenges in global leadership: how to manage escalating geopolitical conflicts without triggering economic instability at home.
History shows a consistent pattern.
When tensions rise — especially in the Mideast — markets react.
Oil prices spike, investor confidence drops, and recession fears begin to creep in. Under pressure, past administrations have often fallen into one of two traps: projecting weakness that invites further instability, or overcorrecting with aggressive rhetoric that rattles markets and fuels uncertainty.
Either way, the result has been the same — economic vulnerability at home during moments of global tension.
What we are witnessing now under President Trump is fundamentally different.
At first glance, critics point to what they call inconsistency.
One day the president takes a hardline stance, the next day his tone softens. One moment he escalates pressure, the next he signals restraint.
But that interpretation misses what is actually happening.
This is not inconsistency — it is precision.
President Trump is doing something few leaders have managed to execute effectively: he is speaking to two critical audiences at the same time — America’s adversaries and the global financial markets.
And he understands that each requires a different signal.

There is no evidence medical cannabis works against anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a new study.
Researchers with the University of Sydney and other institutions undertook a review of available evidence and ended up analyzing 54 randomized, controlled trials that were conducted from 1980 to 2025.
“There were no significant effects on outcomes associated with anxiety, anorexia nervosa, psychotic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and opioid use disorder,” they wrote in the paper, which was published on March 16 by The Lancet.
The authors also said there was an absence of evidence from randomized, controlled trials for using cannabinoids, a form of medical cannabis, to treat depression.

Australia and Germany have moved to tighten defence ties, signing a suite of agreements to expand military cooperation and space capabilities.
Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles and German counterpart Boris Pistorius formalised the arrangements on March 26.
The centrepiece is a proposed “status of forces” agreement, designed to make it easier for Australian and German forces to operate within each other’s territories.
Marles described the partnership as one “that’s going from strength to strength,” while Pistorius said Australia is Germany’s closest partner in the Pacific, pointing to a world of “less reliability, less honesty, [and] less predictability.”
The status of forces agreement will streamline arrangements for joint operations, training, and deployments between the nation’s militaries.

Saving America Comes First

I’m tired.
Not of the fight. Not of the debate. Not even of the opposition.
I’m tired of the excuses.
For weeks now, we’ve been told—again and again—that passing the SAVE America Act is just too difficult. Too complicated. Too procedurally burdensome. Too politically risky.
“It’s an arduous task,” they say.
Good. It should be. Because saving America has never been easy. And the sooner the United States Senate remembers that, the better.
Let’s just say the quiet part out loud: without election integrity, none of this matters. Not your tax policy. Not your foreign policy. Not your judicial philosophy.
If the American people cannot trust that their vote is secure, verified, and accurately counted—then the entire structure of our representative republic begins to rot from the inside out. That’s not dramatic. That’s foundational.
And yet here we are, listening to elected officials wringing their hands over how “hard” it might be to pass legislation that simply ensures only American citizens vote in American elections.
Hard?
Let me tell you about hard.
Hard was a freezing winter at Valley Forge with no shoes, no socks, and barely enough food to survive.
Hard was living next door to neighbors who were loyal to the Crown, while you risked everything for independence.
Hard was knowing that the British army could crush you at any moment—and choosing to fight anyway.
Hard was brother against brother.
Family against family.
A nation not yet born, hanging by a thread.
That was hard. And they didn’t have polling data. They didn’t have cable news. They didn’t have consultants whispering in their ears about “optics” and “process.” They had conviction. They had courage. And they had a belief that what they were building was worth everything. Even their lives.
