Terror, Trump and Bolivian Turmoil Fuel 'The Tiger's' Rise in Colombia

The outcome last night of round one of Colombia's presidential election was nothing short of stunning to most of Latin America and Washington, D.C., not to mention many Colombians themselves.
In near-final returns, Abelardo de la Espriella — a millionaire trial lawyer, hard-core conservative and first-time candidate — led the first-round vote with 43.7%, followed by leftist Sen. Ivan Cepeda with 40.9% and center-right Sen. Paloma Valencia with 6.9%.
The granddaughter of beloved former president Guillermo Leon Valencia, Valencia promptly endorsed de la Espriella once final returns were in and thus made the fiery hopeful known as "The Tiger" the betting favorite over Cepeda in the runoff June 21.
The results reported Sunday night remained unofficial pending a final count, a process expected to take several days because all ballots must be cast in person by voters presenting a national ID card. Both Cepeda and outgoing leftist President Gustavo Petro said Sunday they would withhold judgment until the official count is completed.
For now, all signs are that Colombia is poised to become the seventh Latin American country in three years to shift politically from left to right.
