Turns Out Teetotaling, Mormon GOP Governor Is A Savage Populist Who Wants To Nuke Big Tech

“If you want to be angry at someone, be angry at the social media companies. These are the wealthiest and most powerful companies in the history of the world, and they’re profiting off of destroying our kids and destroying our country.”
Hardcore. Populist. Unflinching. This sounds like something Liz Warren or Bernie Sanders would say, or maybe Steve Bannon, who has long been a Big Tech adversary.
But, no, these were the words of a relatively unknown, teetotaling, Mormon Republican governor: Utah’s Spencer Cox.
Politico published a story Sunday on Cox and his crusade against Silicon Valley and social media companies. Cox has said he supports a 16-and-under ban on social media use similar to Australia’s; his state is suing Snapchat for its “illicit business practices that are akin to peddling digital nicotine to kids”; and he has signed a slate of anti-tech bills, including legislation that bans cell phones in Utah classrooms. The outlet also reported that he is considering a sin tax on tech, similar to taxes on alcohol and tobacco.
