Charles Hurt is stepping down as opinion editor of The Washington Times to take over hosting duties at Fox News’ weekend morning show.
He will continue to write a regular column for The Times.
The network announced Monday that Mr. Hurt will replace Will Cain as co-host of “Fox & Friends Weekend” with Rachel Campos-Duffy starting on Jan. 18 as part of a broader reshuffling following the departure of longtime host Neil Cavuto.
Mr. Cain will succeed Mr. Cavuto — a skeptic of President-elect Donald Trump who declined to accept a new contract last month — with a new show in the 4 p.m. weekday time slot.
Mr. Hurt and Mr. Cain are vocal supporters of Mr. Trump, who will be sworn into his second term in the White House on Jan. 20. Mr. Hurt has consistently supported the president-elect since taking over The Times’ award-winning opinion page in January 2017. He also has been a Fox News contributor.
“While I am sad to be leaving my full-time position as opinion editor, I will forever be a proud veteran of the paper, where I’ve spent most of my career, and proud of the columns I write for its dedicated readers,” Mr. Hurt said in a statement.
A veteran journalist with more than two decades of experience, he started as a reporter for the Detroit News and the Charlotte Observer before joining The Times in 2003 and serving as its Capitol Hill bureau chief. He later covered the White House for the New York Post and was an editor at the Drudge Report before returning to The Times as opinion editor.
“Charlie’s contributions to The Times are immeasurable,” said Christopher Dolan, president and executive editor of The Times. “He always has been a first-rate newsman, and our readers have long valued his irreverent take on the solons who descend on this town. We’re thrilled for him and that his commentary will remain on our pages.”
