GOP senators roll out ‘Wall Act,’ seek to help Trump fulfill his border vision

Republican senators are fighting to ensure President Trump puts the final touches on the “big, beautiful wall” along the U.S.-Mexico border that he failed to complete during his first term in office.
Sens. James E. Risch of Idaho and Katie Britt of Alabama announced Monday that they were introducing the Wall Act, which sets aside $25 billion to finish construction on the massive barrier.
“Now is the time to finish the southern border wall,” Mr. Risch said. “The WALL Act helps President Trump complete what he started in his first term and does it all without adding a dime to our national debt.”
The lawmakers said the cost of the wall constriction will be offset by “closing loopholes and eliminating taxpayer-funded entitlements and tax benefits for people who are in the U.S. illegally.” It also imposes fines on immigrants who jump the border and those who overstay their visas.
“For the last four years, millions of illegal immigrants flooded across our southern border, exploiting open-border policies and wasting vast sums of taxpayer dollars,” Mr. Risch said. “Those days are over.”
