ABC to pay Trump $15 million legal settlement in defamation suit

ABC has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by President-elect Donald Trump, ending the dispute that centered on anchor George Stephanopoulos’ inaccurate comments surrounding a civil lawsuit against Mr. Trump.
The money will be transferred to an escrow account managed by Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, and will go toward the president-elect’s presidential library, according to the legal filing made public on Saturday.
The network must transfer the funds within 10 days and are also on the hook for Mr. Brito’s $1 million in attorney fees.
The payment will be considered a “charitable contribution,” according to the filing, with the money earmarked for a non-profit organization that is being created for Mr. Trump’s eventual construction of a library.
Mr. Trump’s suit against the network stemmed from on-air comments made by Mr. Stephanopolous during an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace, South Carolina Republican, in March.
