Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is out of power after 24 years, landing safely in Moscow to start a new life. This is the day the liberal West has long hoped for, another dictator overthrown leaving room for another burgeoning democracy. They should be careful what they wish for.

President Joe Biden
spoke for the entire Western world when he issued his naive statement of joy and optimism for the Syrian people.

“At long last, the Assad regime has fallen. This regime brutalized and tortured and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. A fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice. It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country. It’s also a moment of risk and uncertainty. As we all turn to the question of what comes next, the United States will work with our partners and the stakeholders in Syria to help them seize an opportunity to manage the risks.”

Yes, Assad sucked, but there’s no reason to believe the rebel insurgency that deposed him will be any better, both in terms of American interests or the interests of the Syrian people. Remember, we armed, funded and trained the mujahideen to fight the Soviets in the 80’s, before that same movement turned around and landed the most devastating blow on U.S. soil in the history of our country. We intervened to overthrow Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi, only to see Iraq and Libya turn into hotbeds of terrorism in the power vacuum that ensued. And we already know that Syria is ground zero for terrorism, having birthed ISIS the last time the country went through a major upheaval. Now we’re not only cheering the rebels who hate us under the fantasy that they’ll become dutiful Western liberals, but actively plan to aid them. They might agree with us that Assad is bad, but like all radical Islamists, it’s the West that is the real enemy.

Donald Trump alone seems to be the only Western leader to understand this. “Syria is a mess, but is not our friend,” Trump
wrote on Truth Social, and “THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!”
