Worrying new milestone: Two million coronavirus cases recorded globally

In a worrying new milestone, more than two million cases of the new coronavirus have been officially registered around the world.

Official cases of the new coronavirus passed more than two million overnight, according to a tally compiled by AFP based on official sources.

At least 2,000,576 infections, including 126,871 deaths, have been recorded. The global contagion has begun to spread more rapidly. It took 83 days for the first million cases to be recorded. The second million took just 14 days.

Europe is the hardest hit continent, with 1,010,858 cases and 85,271 fatalities.

The United States, where infections have skyrocketed, has registered 609,240 cases, and 26,033 deaths.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organisation (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only the most serious cases.

More than 6400 cases of COVID-19 have now been confirmed in Australia, with 2886 in New South Wales, 1299 in Victoria, 999 in Queensland, 433 in South Australia, 527 in Western Australia, 165 in Tasmania, 103 in the Australian Capital Territory and 28 in the Northern Territory.

The death toll stands at 63, after another former Ruby Princess passenger, a Canberra woman aged in her 60s, died on Wednesday.
