‘Buried in Mud’: Death Hangs Over Palu After Indonesia Quake, Tsunami
The death toll from the Indonesia disasters surpasses 1,200, as fears grow that many more are dead

PALU, Indonesia—The stench of rotting corpses hung in the air despite a strong breeze as a dozen soldiers took delivery of another batch of body bags Tuesday and carefully placed them in a hilltop grave.
One of the soldiers said they buried 115 bodies in a mass grave Monday and so far Tuesday had buried a further 143. There were no family or friends—just the soldiers and a group of volunteers from a nearby university.
The burials have barely begun. Officials said the death toll from the earthquake and tsunami that struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on Friday has reached 1,234, with many more feared dead.
