A gunman opened fire in a Pittsburgh synagogue, killing multiple people. Here’s what you need to know about the tragedy.
A gunman opened fire inside a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday morning, killing 11 people and injuring six others, including four police officers, before being taken into custody, authorities said.
The brazen attack occurred inside the Tree of Life Synagogue in the city's predominantly Jewish Squirrel Hill neighborhood just 10 minutes from downtown. Multiple law enforcement officials identified the suspect in the shooting as Robert Bowers, 48.
Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said the suspect was taken to a hospital but did not clarify if he was one of the six people injured. A visibly emotional Hissrich told reporters the four officers had non-life threatening injuries while the others were critical. He could not immediately confirm how many people died in the shooting.
Hissrich said the incident fell under a hate crime and will be a federal investigation. He said there appeared to be no active threat to the community.
