VIDEO: Massive earthquake hits Mexico City, leaving dozens dead
At least 42 people are dead after a massive earthquake rocked Mexico City Tuesday, officials said — 32 years to the day since a killer quake wreaked havoc there and killed thousands.
Tuesday’s magnitude-7.1 quake was centered about 70 miles southeast of the nation’s capital, according to the US Geological Survey.
Several buildings groaned amid the tremors before falling in on themselves as passersby shouted in horror, according to videos posted to social media.
A video shot from the upper floor of a building and tweeted by former Mexican Ambassador Jorge Guajardo shows smoke and dust rising from rubble across the city.
Another showed people on the 38th floor of a building bracing themselves as the structure rocked back and forth and lights flickered. One person could be seen making the sign of the cross.
