Syria: Suicide Bomber Hits Army Base, Monitors Say
By REUTERS
JULY 6, 2015
A suicide bomber from the Nusra Front, an offshoot of Al Qaeda, blew himself up in a Syrian Army outpost in the northern city of Aleppo and killed at least 25 soldiers and allied militia members, a monitoring group said. Hundreds were hurt. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence in Syria from its base in Britain, said the Syrian Army had responded with heavy firepower. Aleppo is a divided city, and several Islamist-led groups recently began an offensive to control the parts of the city that remain in government hands. Syrian television said the army had foiled an attempt by Sunni extremists to detonate an explosives-laden truck and that its blast had gone off before reaching its target.
A version of this brief appears in print on July 7, 2015, on page A6 of the New York edition with the headline: Syria: Suicide Bomber Hit Army Base, Monitors Say.
