Facebook market value plunges by nearly $150B

Facebook shares were torched in after-hours trading on Wednesday, tumbling more than 20 percent after the social network revealed fewer daily and monthly users than expected in the second quarter — and forecast 2018 growth much lower than Wall Street forecast.
The sell-off wiped out nearly $150 billion from Facebook’s market cap and, faster than you can say, “Move fast and break things,” erased roughly $20 billion from the tech mogul’s wealth.

Facebook Inc. warned that its growth is slowing, sending its stock price plummeting as investors feared the social-media titan’s fortunes aren’t immune to the multiple controversies it has faced this year.
After touching record highs earlier on Wednesday, Facebook shares dropped as much as 23% in after-hours trading, a plunge that would wipe roughly $130 billion from the company’s value if it holds when the markets open on Thursday. A LONE attacker has detonated a bomb at the US embassy in China’s capital of Beijing.
Witnesses reported the large explosion this afternoon before dozens of officials swooped on the area.
“There was an explosion at approximately 1pm today in the public space off the South East corner of the Embassy compound,” an embassy spokesperson said.

A group of conservative House lawmakers on Wednesday introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the top Department of Justice (DOJ) official overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
The impeachment document makes a series of charges against Rosenstein, the latest sign of escalating efforts among conservatives to oust the DOJ’s No. 2 official.

After months of speculation President Trump would recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea as legitimate, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo bulldozed that narrative during testimony in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday afternoon.
"On the subject of Russia, I want to bring something to your attention right off the bat today. Today the Trump administration is releasing what we're calling the Crimea Declaration," Pompeo said.
"I want to show this committee that the United States does not, and will not recognize the Kremlin's annexation of Crimea," Pompeo continued. "There will be no relief of Crimea-related sanctions until Russia returns control of the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine.”

Trump critics among the least popular senators in the country

The five least popular senators, according to a Morning Consult poll, have all clashed with President Trump.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., leads the list with a 30 percent approval rating while a staggering 56 percent disapprove. Frequent Trump foil Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., comes next at 30 percent approval and 51 percent disapproval.
Perhaps more surprisingly, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has a 42 percent approval rating while 46 percent of Arizonans disapprove of his job performance. The next two are incumbents Trump and the GOP are actively targeting for defeat in November. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., stands at 40 percent approval and 44 percent disapproval. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., is deadlocked at 44 percent apiece.

Pakistan Election Day Bombing Kills at Least 30

A bombing outside a polling station in the city of Quetta in western Pakistan killed at least 30 people, according to officials, as voting began in a pivotal national election.
Police said the attacker was likely a suicide bomber who struck near a police vehicle parked outside a polling station in the suburbs of Quetta. Beyond the 30 killed, another 35 victims were in critical condition, said Kamran Kasi, a doctor at Quetta’s Civil Hospital. Most of the casualties were voters.

After the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed his razor-thin defeat in the 2000 presidential election, former Vice President Al Gore could have gone to the mat trying to delegitimize the presidency of George W. Bush. Much to his credit, he didn’t.
Democrat Gore had won the popular vote, after all, and the turmoil created by the historic 36-day recount in Florida was all he needed to divide the country for selfish and ideological reasons. But instead of orchestrating a radical leftist resistance, Gore chose country over power.
As difficult as it must have been, Gore was big enough to let it go, accept his loss, and recognize that Republican Bush was the legitimate president of the United States.
