POPE Francis has declared the death penalty “inadmissable” in an update of Catholic believers’ most important guide to Church teaching, the catechism, the Vatican announced on Thursday.
“The Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that ‘the death penalty is inadmissable because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person’,” the new text states.
Francis approved the change to the catechism, which covers a wide range of moral and social issues, during a meeting in May with the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Church’s doctrinal watchdog.
The update also says that the Church will “work with determination” for the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein fired a staffer a few years back who was allegedly part of an effort to spy and pass on political intelligence to the Chinese government.
The staffer, based in the Democrat's San Francisco office, was suspected of delivering political intelligence, though nothing top secret, to officials based at the local Chinese Consulate, Politico reported.
The FBI informed Feinstein, the then-chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, about five years ago about the staffer and allegations that the staffer was a spy. The source who confirmed the incident to the San Francisco Chronicle said “Dianne was mortified” upon learning about it.

Google won’t comment on the scoop by The Intercept’s Ryan Gallagher, which pretty well confirms the story: The company is rushing back into China with a search app that enforces the regime’s censorship rules. So much for that “Don’t be evil” slogan.
Gallagher cites internal memos, surely leaked by an insider, about the “Dragonfly” project to write an app for Android phones that could launch within months. The app will automatically suppress references to “anticommunist,” “dissidents,” the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, “Animal Farm,” “1984” and on and on and on.
Any “sensitive queries” on the regime’s blacklist will yield a “no results shown.”

Presumed U.S. Korean War remains return to American soil
Honorable carry ceremony held in Hawaii to welcome apparent remains of United States soldiers from North Korea.
Vice President Mike Pence said Wednesday the return of the remains of 55 Americans presumed dead from the Korean War was a sign of "tangible progress in our efforts to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula."
Pence spoke at a ceremony at Hawaii's Hickam Air Force Base to mark the arrival of the remains on U.S. soil and the beginning of long process to identify them.
"Today, they are known but to God," said Pence, whose father fought in Korea. "But soon we will know their names and we will tell their stories of courage."

A “feeling as though the world is going to end.” That could describe what millions of people could have experienced in the last 100 years. World War I, World War II, the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Sept. 11, the ISIS rampage throughout the world, all not only understandably evoked fear of the world ending, but all revolved around madness, war and genocide.
But today that feeling is brought to liberals simply because their favorite lost an election. And strangely enough, it seems compounded with every good piece of news about the economy and the national security of the United States. Weird, no?
Today’s “feeling as though the world is going to end” is now a hallmark of those suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, a term meant to identify and mock people back from the edge of a mass hysteria assigning everything horrible in the history of humanity to a guy who was simply better and smarter at campaigning, and liked the American people more than his opponent.

WASHINGTON—The White House, seeking to ratchet up pressure on Beijing and prod it into further negotiations, said it would consider more than doubling its proposed tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods to 25%.
The move Wednesday came as talks between Beijing and Washington have stalled, and Washington is looking for additional leverage. In a Monday White House meeting, Mr. Trump dismissed a proposed 10% China tariff as weak, said people familiar with the discussions, and had officials bump up the levy to 25%.

Senate sends $717B defense policy bill to Trump's desk

The Senate on Wednesday easily passed a $717 billion annual defense policy bill despite some angst about its lack of a provision to block President Trump’s deal with Chinese telecommunications giant ZTE.
The Senate approved the compromise fiscal 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in a 87-10 vote, sending it to Trump’s desk for his expected signature and keeping it on track to become law before the start of the fiscal year for the first time since the fiscal 1997 bill.
This year's bill — named after Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is at home undergoing treatment for brain cancer — would authorize about $639 billion for the Pentagon's base budget and the Energy Department's defense programs. It would also allow for another $69 billion for a war fund known as the Overseas Contingency Operations account.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard is expected to put 100 gun boats in the Persian Gulf sometime in the next 48 hours to practice "swarm" tactics simulating actions which could potentially shut down the Strait of Hormuz, where roughly 10 percent of the world’s oil passes through each year, two U.S. officials said Wednesday.
Iran normally conducts its annual "swarm" exercise in the fall, but officials said the event has been moved up likely due to recent threats made between President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in recent days.
In a statement about the exercise, Navy Capt. Bill Urban, a U.S. Central Command spokesman, said: "We are aware of the increase in Iranian naval operations within the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman. We are monitoring it closely, and will continue to work with our partners to ensure freedom of navigation and free flow of commerce in international waterways." The Arabian Gulf is also known as the Persian Gulf.
