Coronavirus live updates: Australian Defence Force troops touch down in Victoria

A group of Australian Defence Force medical personnel have arrived in Victoria to help with the state's coronavirus testing blitz amid a concerning spike in cases.

Australian Defence Force troops have arrived in Victoria to help with the testing blitz from Saturday.

Sixty Australian Army troops landed at Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne just before 6pm on Friday, according to 7 Newsreports.

Up to 200 specialist medical and support personnel from the Australian Defence Force have been called in to help.

“Great to welcome a group of ADF medical personnel who will support DHHS and our community with the increased COVID testing operation. Thanks so much for joining us and take care,” Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner, Andrew Crisp, said on Twitter.

It comes after 30 new coronavirus cases were recorded in Victoria over the past 24 hours, meaning the state has now seen double-digit increases for ten days straight.

Of those, seven were linked to outbreaks, five cases were identified through routine testing, five cases were detected in returned travellers in hotel quarantine and 13 cases are under investigation.
