The last time a president was in the news over talk of affairs, there was plenty of moral outrage from his own party — but that’s where the disapproval stopped.
Why? As Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, put it back in 1998, then-President Bill Clinton was “guilty of certain indiscretions, in his private life.” But, she said, Clinton “did not commit high crimes and misdemeanors” that warranted impeachment.
Fast forward 20 years from the Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal, and President Donald Trump is denying affairs with adult-film star Stormy Daniels, as well as former Playboy model Karen McDougal. Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen asserts the president directed him to break campaign-finance laws by paying the women for their silence about the alleged affairs. Trump denies that.
