The US must make Putin pay for his nerve agent attack

Nearly five months after Russia’s nerve-agent attack on British soil, Washington this week finally came up with a meaningful response: major new sanctions on Vladimir Putin’s regime.
The pain starts Aug. 22, with a broad ban on US exports of any technology with a potential national-security use. And further sanctions will kick in three months later unless Russia agrees to stop all chemical-weapons use and allow inspections of its chem facilities.
As State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert put it, Washington has determined “that the government of the Russian Federation has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of international law” in the attack that sickened former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia — who happily have both recovered.
