Obama’s Iran deal was written on water and Trump just drowned it

In 2015, when a desperate President Obama decided to implement a deal with Iran in the face of fierce Republican opposition Congress (and even some Democratic defections), he was taking a gamble. The thinking was: either a pro-Iran deal Democrat wins the presidency in 2016 and keeps it in place, or the deal becomes so entrenched that even a Republican president wouldn’t have the guts to pull out.

Today, Obama lost that gamble, when President Trump announced that he was withdrawing the United States and reimposing sanctions on Iran. In January, Trump set a 120-day ultimatum that he would be pulling out of the deal if Congress and/or the Europeans could not fix its fundamental flaws. Many thought he was bluffing. Even in the days leading up to the announcement, a number of informed observers had suggested that maybe he’d propose some sort of halfway measures. But on Tuesday, Trump followed through, promising to impose "the highest level of economic sanctions" not just on Iran, but on countries that do business with Iran, thus helping the regime's quest for nuclear weapons.

The Iran deal, which looked bad at the time, only got worse with age. Its central flaw was that in the name of getting temporary concessions regarding Iran’s nuclear program, the U.S. and world powers gave up on everything else. The deal allowed Iran to expand its ballistic missile program, finance terrorism, invest more in its conventional military, and more boldly meddle in Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon through its proxy Hezbollah. An obsession with preserving the deal at all costs handcuffed U.S. foreign policy, because any action in opposition to Iran could potentially be used by the terrorist regime as a pretext for pulling out of the deal.
