Vladimir Putin can do anything he likes in Syria – the West doesn't care enough to stop him

I hate to repeat myself, but when history does the same it seems only fair to respond in kind.
Back in September 2013 I examined the Obama administration’s ineptitude in dealing with Syria (and Russia):
Cynical, focused Russian diplomacy is close to achieving a stunning success, winning all Moscow’s strategic goals in Syria with the Americans left sprawling. Crimes against humanity committed by the Assad regime that were denounced in the strongest terms by Western capitals may soon be shoved by Washington into the Too Difficult tray.
Vladimir Putin has exploited Barrack Obama’s weakness on this issue like Rafael Nadal sending a lowly ranked tennis player scurrying to and fro across the court, steadily dragging him out of position before sending down a blistering winner into an empty space.
All is proceeding accordingly. Moscow has flipped President Obama’s oft-repeated "Assad must go!" into "actually, Assad will still be around after Obama goes." Massed Russian warships sail southwards towards Syria for an attempted final blasting of anti-Assad elements and victory (of sorts) for Assad, as presaged by one of the witches in Macbeth:
