An elaborate series of bomb threats targeting schools in NSW and Victoria has been confirmed as a hoax, police said in a statement on Friday evening.

The computerised bomb threat warning of 'a bloodbath in 40 minutes' caused several schools around Sydney to be evacuated.

“Victoria Police can confirm it is treating the threatening phone calls received by a number of Victorian schools today as a hoax," Victoria Police said in a written statement.

"We are satisfied that there are no imminent threats to schools and that the threats are not terrorism related."

Police are still investigating the origin of the calls.

The Daily Telegraph reported up to seven school were emptied following threats that claimed there was a bomb in a backpack on school grounds.

Similar threats were made in London, Paris, Belgium, Norway, Tokyo and Amsterdam, and police are now investigating whether the phone calls are linked.

NSW authorities are dealing with several bomb threats that have been made to schools in Woolooware, Ulladulla, Richmond, Penrith and Mona Vale.

Evacuations took place at Woolooware High School in the Sutherland Shire and Penrith High School.

All children and staff of Woolooware High School were evacuated to nearby Shark Park.

Eyewitness Alissa Machione told Yahoo7 that she was in one of the first cars stopped outside Wooloware High School.

She added: "The cops just blocked both side of the road and were getting all the children over to Sharkies leagues club immediately."

A NSW Police spokeswoman told Yahoo7 on Friday afternoon: "Several police operations are underway at NSW schools. The first call about in about 11am.

"Police are aware of numerous threats made to schools in the Metropolitan and Southern Regions.

"Investigations are continuing, and police are liaising with the Department of Education.

"Police are warning that making such threats is a serious criminal offence and every effort will be made to identify the person or persons responsible."

NSW Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed to Yahoo7 that they were assisting police with the multiple operations.

A spokesman for Victoria Police said: "We are aware that a number of Victorian schools have received a threatening phone call today.

"The schools are being evacuated as a precaution. We are aware that schools in a number of other states and countries have received similar phone calls in the past 24 hours."

There were reports of police activity at Berwick Chase Primary School in Berwick and and Aitken Creek Primary School in Craigieburn in Victoria.

A Victoria Department of Education spokesman said: “A number of schools have received threatening phone calls this morning. The schools have reported these calls to the police.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students is always our number one priority, and the Department is taking these incidents very seriously.

“All schools have emergency management plans which include evacuation plans, and the affected schools have enacted their plans this morning.”

Anyone with further information regarding the hoax is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report to www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
