Obama’s power vacuum

As the President mulls his options, our enemies are forcefully acting

As the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria — the group that’s too extreme for Al Qaeda — marches toward Baghdad to expand the Taliban-style state it is imposing in parts of Iraq and Syria, President Obama said the U.S. has “a lot of concern about it.”

What does that mean?

“Iraq’s going to need more help. It’s going to need more help from us, and it’s going to need more help from the international community.”

What does that mean?

Only that the commander-in-chief’s team is working “around the clock” on a plan. Just as they’ve done as jihadists and Syrian dictator Bashar Assad cut down secular rebels there, allowing ISIS to push into Iraq next door.

“I don’t rule out anything” in Iraq, said Obama, “because we do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either Iraq or Syria, for that matter.”

What does that mean?

Very little, considering these jihadists are already the law in a swath covering parts of both countries — where they have seized half a billion dollars from the banks and taken control of airports, oil fields and military bases.

They are imposing a cruel version of sharia law, ordering women to stay inside and venture out, if at all, fully covered. On social media, the zealots post images of crucified infidels and of dead soldiers in pools of blood. These are meant to inspire more zealots to join their ranks, and to intimidate those who might stand up against them.

So much for Obama’s 2011 declaration that the blood and treasure sacrificed in Iraq led us to a “moment of success,” as “we’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq.” So much for his boast that “we are ending these wars in a way that will make America stronger and the world more secure.”

And so much for his claim last year that the United States would use “a series of persistent, targeted efforts to dismantle specific networks of violent extremists” in place of a boundless global war on terror.

Syria and now Iraq have become the central magnet for the world’s would-be jihadists, and Afghanistan could well be next. Obama is heading for the exits there, much as he did in Iraq. We’re on the departure clock, and the Taliban believe they are dealing with a U.S. leader more concerned with declaring victory as troops withdraw than in actually ensuring it.

Americans are justifiably weary of war, and Obama has no easy options. But when the U.S. stands aside, truly evil actors can fill the vacuum.

Seeing Osama Bin Laden’s spiritual heirs fighting to conquer a state, much like the Taliban did in Afghanistan before we ousted them, let’s hope this President will rise to the moment to assert a smart, muscular course of action.
