W.H.: Resignation doesn't impact support for Syrian opposition

White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said Monday that the resignation of Syrian opposition leader Moaz Khatib will not affect U.S. support.

"We certainly are sorry to see Khatib step down, but our support for the Syrian opposition will not diminish in any way," Earnest said during a press briefing.

He also indicated that the U.S. does not intend at this point to change the nature of its support from nonlethal assistance to providing rebels with arms.

Khatib, when announcing his resignation Sunday, complained that the international community has not provided Syrians with adequate means to defend themselves against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the AP reported.

Earnest noted that the United States is the largest donor of humanitarian aid and will continue to work with international partners to provide nonlethal support and to pressure Assad to step down. He declined to comment on reports that the CIA is providing training to opposition fighters.

Earnest called Khatib a "courageous and pragmatic leader."

"The opposition has been well-served by his leadership," he said.
