North Korea reportedly test fired short-range rockets into the Sea of Japan Friday as the United States announced a $1-billion plan for 14 new missile interceptors in response to Kim Jong-un’s threats of nuclear war.

In announcing the decision, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said he is determined to ensure protection of the U.S. homeland and stay ahead of the North Korean missile threat. He acknowledged that the interceptors already in place to defend against potential North Korean missile launches have had poor test performances.

“We will strengthen our homeland defence, maintain our commitment to our allies and partners, and make clear to the world that the United States stands firm against aggression,” Hagel told a Pentagon news conference.

The Pentagon intends to add the 14 interceptors to 26 already in place at Fort Greely, Alaska. That will expand the system’s ability to shoot down long-range missiles in flight before they could reach U.S. territory. In addition to those at Greely, the U.S. also has four missile interceptors at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

Hagel said the 14 extras should be in place by September 2017 but will not be deployed until they have been adequately tested.

Meanwhile, North Korea reiterated its threats that U.S. and South Korean “provocateurs will face retaliatory strike anytime.”

“The army and people of the DPRK will blow up all the strongholds and bases of the aggressors and provocateurs fond of playing with fire as they had declared before,” read a statement released Thursday by North Korea’s official news agency.

“The disturbers of peace, war provocateurs and the chieftain of fratricidal confrontation can never find their shelters to escape our just strike.”

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported Friday that the missiles used in North Korea’s test were likely KN-02s, which have a range of 120 k.m.

“The launch was seen as testing its capability for short-range missiles. It seemed to be conducted on a military-unit level, not at a national level,” a South Korean military source told Yonhap.

The test comes a day after Kim Jong-un oversaw a live artillery exercise near a disputed stretch of sea near the border with South Korea.
