Assad blames everyone but himself for Syria's 'chaos'

The Arab Spring has achieved nothing but “chaos”, according to none other than President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. In one of his increasingly rare interviews, the beleaguered dictator of Damascus has chosen to opine that the successful revolutions in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt have "not worked in the interest of freedom, democracy or ending social injustice as much as [they] helped create chaos".

I’ve written before about the curious psychology of the tyrant-at-bay. Assad’s latest thoughts provide further evidence of this phenomenon. He will never understand that the prime cause of Syria’s “chaos” is his own stubborn insistence on staying in power. Had Assad been willing to yield to popular protest, he would have spared his country the agony of full scale civil war. About 26,000 people have now been killed because of his obdurate willingness to cling to the trappings of office (he is not really in power, of course, because large areas of Syria are beyond his control).

In the mind of the tyrant-at-bay, however, all the bloodshed is caused not by the dictator who tries to hold on regardless, but of those who dare resist him. So Assad, the chief cause of the “chaos”, is now trying to blame the victim. He will never acknowledge what a pathetic spectacle he has become.
