PM to push Australia as peace builder

In times of conflict Australia has proven itself as a friend to neighbours near and far.
That is the message Prime Minister Julia Gillard will deliver during a high-level United Nations meeting in New York on Tuesday.
As Australia ramps up its campaign for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Ms Gillard has cited Australia's proven peace-building track record as a premier election point.
Hours after the official opening of UN Leaders Week, Ms Gillard championed Australia's history of financial and hands-on assistance to conflict-stricken countries.
She was expected to link peace with growth in less developed nations, while telling fellow world leaders that Australia has always lent a hand to those in need.
The prime minister was also to stress the commitment is ongoing, with half of Australia's multi-billion-dollar development assistance package destined for fragile or conflict-affected states in the coming year.
This included details of the assistance offered to East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
On Sunday, Ms Gillard said Australia's geographic location and proximity to so many developing nations makes it an ideal peace-builder, and therefore increases the relevance for it to occupy a position on the Security Council.
Australia is vying for one of two seats up for grabs in the Security Council, shaping up against European frontrunners Finland and Luxembourg.
While Ms Gillard admits that securing the 2013-14 seat is "tough", she is confident of Australia's credentials.
The seats will be decided by way of secret ballot among UN member states on October 18.
