Dan Senor: U.S. 'looks impotent'

Dan Senor, a top foreign policy adviser to the GOP presidential ticket, said Friday that President Barack Obama’s failure to oust Syrian dictator Bashar Assad makes the U.S. look “impotent” in the Middle East.

“It’s been over a year since the president said Bashar Assad must go,” Senor said on CBS’s “This Morning.” “Bashar Assad is still in power. America looks impotent in the region.”

More than 20,000 people have died in Syria’s ongoing civil war. While the United States has threatened military action if Assad uses chemical weapons, it has so far avoided direct involvement. The CIA is reportedly helping to supply the Syrian rebels with both weapons and intelligence. Some Republicans have pushed President Barack Obama to do more to oust Assad and end the violence.

“A President Romney would look to do more to help the opposition movement on the ground in Syria,” Senor said. “Working with our allies like the Turks, like the Saudis, like the Qataris, to get the opposition more training, more resources, more weapons, really coordinate the effort and would not have dragged our feet as long as we have.”

Senor said ousting Assad would also hurt Iran, which he labeled America’s biggest foreign policy failure of the past four years. “Tragically, the Obama administration really wasted the first couple of its years of its administration on a failed strategy to isolate Iran, to ramp up economic pressure on Iran,” he said. Romney would increase sanctions further and grant fewer waivers to the sanctions and would put military action back on the table, Senor said.

“What the administration has done is broadcast to Tehran, to the mullahs in Tehran, that military action is the absolute one thing America doesn’t want anybody to do,” Senor said. “So the threat of military action isn’t credible.”

The Obama administration has said the sanctions in place are “crippling” and that it has “thrown the book at the Iranian government in terms of leaving no stone unturned in the sanctions regime.”
