Syrian forces accused of shooting dead funeral mourners as UN observers look on

Syrian government forces were accused of shooting dead more than 20 funeral mourners on Tuesday in full view of UN observers, who themselves narrowly escaped death after a roadside bomb struck their convoy.

Soldiers at a checkpoint in Khan Sheikhun, a town near the northern city of Idlib, opened fire on an anti-regime funeral procession with rocket propelled grenades and heavy calibre weapons mounted on armoured personnel carriers, opposition groups said.

Moments later, a bomb exploded near a four-car convoy of UN monitors, shearing off the front of one vehicle and damaging two others. None of the observers was injured, the UN said. Video footage showed a crowd of Syrians who had gathered around the observers scattering in panic moments after the explosion.

Although it was unclear who was behind the bombing, the scenes of chaos and bloodshed in Khan Sheikhun will increase pressure on the international community to take action against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

The incident was the bloodiest seen first hand by the monitors, who are in Syria to observe a ceasefire brokered by Kofi Annan, the UN and Arab League special envoy to the country.

But with 43 people dying across the country yesterday, opposition activist groups said it was clear that Mr Assad never had any intention of abiding by the truce.

They called on the monitors to speak out publicly about what they saw in Khan Sheikhun.
