UAE Prosecutor Says Flydubai Co-Pilot Drifted Toward Extremism While in Australia

The co-pilot who allegedly attempted to hijack a Flydubai flight on Sept. 30 drifted toward extremism and terrorism while pursuing his studies in Australia, a United Arab Emirates attorney general said on Oct. 9.

Flight FZ1073 was en route from Dubai to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain with an emergency axe. The aircraft dropped about 14,000 feet in 30 seconds before passengers and crew members intervened. Two reserve pilots who were on board later took control and landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia.

Emirati Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said the 29-year-old suspect was inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States and intended to crash the aircraft into Ben Gurion Airport in a suicide attack, with the aim of “causing the greatest possible loss of life,” according to a statement carried by the state news agency WAM.

Americans’ incomes and net worth rose in the years after the pandemic, the Federal Reserve said in a new report covering 2022–2025. 

Despite inflation climbing to its highest level in 40 years after the public health crisis, U.S. households survived economic storm clouds, with many families thriving.

Real (inflation-adjusted) median family income rose 7 percent in the three-year span to $82,200. Low-income families saw the largest gains, with the bottom 60 percent increasing by up to 7 percent. By comparison, the top 10 percent posted a 6 percent decline in real income. 

This mirrors the post-crisis labor market, which tilted in workers’ favor. Employers, mainly in the services sector, bolstered wages and offered bonuses to attract talent.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that China represents America's greatest economic and military threat, saying the Trump administration is aggressively moving to reduce U.S. dependence on Chinese pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and critical minerals despite recent trade agreements between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In an interview with Newsmax's Greta Van Susteren at the network's NPolicy Summit in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Bessent said the relationship with China presents an unprecedented national security challenge because Beijing is simultaneously a major trading partner and strategic adversary.

"Now, China is both. They're the biggest economic threat, and they're the biggest military threat," Bessent said emphatically.

The Treasury secretary contrasted today's relationship with China with the Cold War, when America's principal economic competitors were largely allies and the Soviet Union was its chief military adversary.

Bessent said the growing overlap between economic competition and national security has fundamentally changed his responsibilities at Treasury. 

"Economic security is national security, national security is economic security," he said, explaining that the administration is prioritizing the protection of critical American supply chains.

But Bessent stressed that Washington is not seeking to end economic relations with Beijing. "We don't want to decouple from China. We need to de-risk," he said.

WASHINGTON — Katie Zacharia, a former Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, will be the White House press secretary, President Trump announced, describing her as a “loyal and brilliant supporter.”

Zacharia is a longtime backer of Trump and a fixture on conservative media, particularly on Fox News. She’s also contributed op-eds to The Post.

“She’s a friend of most of you,” Trump told reporters at the White House about his new spokesperson. “I know she likes people. She likes all of you, actually. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but we just hired a new press secretary. And she’s going to be, I think, terrific.”

Not well-known to the public, Trump, in the formal announcement, noted her ties to his team in his announcement and her long career in Republican politics.

“She was previously involved in my Campaigns, assisting in key Swing States, where we won 7 out of 7,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Just over a month ago, we told you about reports of a whistleblower email claiming he’d been instructed to find crimes committed not only by President Donald Trump, but also by individuals and organizations affiliated with Trump.

In a huge development, through our Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request, the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) has just obtained public records regarding potential political corruption in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office after a whistleblower sent a mass email to the office that was subsequently scrubbed from office servers. 

Today, thanks to our FOIL request, we have that email.

We just received it, along with 78 other pages of documents. And it adds more context to the previous reports, as well as some of the back-and-forth between this alleged whistleblower, former New York Assistant Attorney General Daniel Wiesenfeld, and Letitia James’ office, including allegations of her sending detectives to follow him and bang on his door to harass him. And he claims he was threatened with retaliation if he didn’t destroy evidence of corruption within the New York Attorney General’s office. Not only that, but the production we received last night includes numerous documents from October 5.

To refresh your memory, former AG James had filed a civil lawsuit against President Trump, accusing him of inflating the value of property to take out loans. And even though all the banks said there was no problem with these loans, and the properties were within normal values, James still managed to obtain a $500 million judgment against the president. The penalty was later deemed unconstitutional and overturned.

Latin America turns right as Democrats turn left

The final result won’t be known until later this month, but if the first round of Brazil’s election is any indication, it will soon become the latest Latin American country to turn back to conservatism after socialism led to crime, inflation, and stagnant economic growth. At a time when so many young Americans are tempted by the easy answers socialism offers, Latin America’s painful experience should serve as a warning of what the United States can still avoid.

Conservative candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, led socialist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 47% to 45%, in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, setting up a runoff election that will be held Oct. 25. Considering how well Bolsonaro’s party performed in downballot races across the country, he is now the favorite to win round two.

A Bolsonaro win would cap an extraordinary run of victories for the Latin American right. Center-right businessman Daniel Noboa won Ecuador’s presidency in October 2023, followed a month later by libertarian economist Javier Milei in Argentina. In 2025, Bolivia elected Rodrigo Paz, ending nearly two decades of socialist rule, while Honduras and Chile elected conservatives Nasry Asfura and José Antonio Kast. This year, Laura Fernández won in Costa Rica, Keiko Fujimori in Peru, and Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia. Brazil, Latin America’s largest country, could be next.

President Donald Trump on Oct. 9 announced a new committee to investigate whether a Federal Reserve governor made false statements.

The committee will probe allegations that Lisa Cook, governor of the Federal Reserve, offered false information in connection with at least one mortgage instrument, Trump said in a presidential memorandum establishing the panel.

The Federal Reserve is the country’s central banking system. Cook, 62, was appointed as its governor in 2022 and confirmed by the Senate.

Depending on the findings, there may be cause to remove Cook, Trump said.

Kevin Hassett, an adviser to Trump; Keith Sonderling, acting director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics; and Andrea Lucas, chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, are members of the committee.

WASHINGTON—The State Department imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, saying Washington “will ban transactions with this rogue court, cutting off their resources and crippling its ability to operate.”

“For decades, Republicans and Democrats alike rejected the idea that the International Criminal Court had the power to prosecute American citizens, military service members, or political leaders,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.

“America never joined the court. We don’t need it. And we don’t want it.”

The United States has opposed ICC efforts to investigate or prosecute American military and intelligence officers for actions in Afghanistan or other previous operations.
