Google admits to privacy ‘mistakes’ in Capitol Hill testimony

Google will acknowledge that it has made “mistakes” on privacy issues in testimony an executive of the Alphabet Inc. unit will deliver to a US Senate committee Wednesday, according to a document reviewed by Reuters.
“We acknowledge that we have made mistakes in the past, from which we have learned, and improved our robust privacy program,” Google chief privacy officer Keith Enright will say in written testimony before the Senate Commerce Committee. Google will testify alongside AT&T, Amazon, Apple and other companies amid growing concerns about data privacy.
Google’s written testimony did not identify specific prior mistakes, but the company has come under fire over privacy issues.

George Soros Funded Fusion GPS, His Spokesman Confirms

* A spokesman for left-wing billionaire financier George Soros is acknowledging that he indirectly funded Fusion GPS, the firm behind the Steele dossier
* Sources have told The Daily Caller News Foundation in the past that Soros helped fund Fusion’s post-election work on Russian interference in the election process
* Soros’ spokesman told The Washington Post that Soros donated to the Democracy Integrity Project, a group founded by a former staffer to Sen. Dianne Feinstein
George Soros has indirectly funded Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm behind the infamous Steele dossier, a spokesman for the billionaire financier has acknowledged.
Michael Vachon, the Soros aide, told Washington Post columnist David Ignatius that Soros provided a grant to a nonprofit group called the Democracy Integrity Project.
That organization, which was formed in 2017 by Daniel Jones, a former Senate Intelligence Committee staffer for Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, paid Fusion GPS as a contractor to continue an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Staffers for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley have received a number of serious and horrific threats in recent days as the battle over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh rages on.
Here are a few examples of phone calls the office has received, which were provided by staff.
-“I hope you get raped so you can understand what that woman is going through.”
-“You’re a disgusting excuse for a human being, and I don’t know how you can live with yourself. I hope you never have children because they’ll be just as worthless as you are.”
-“You’re racist trash.”
-“Senator Grassley doesn’t have a spine and neither do you bitch.”
-“I just wanted to call and tell you that you are a piece of shit and Senator Grassley is a fucking piece of shit and he can’t die from a heart attack soon enough.”
-“I feel really sorry for women like you – outside of your office you’re probably disturbed by this but apparently you have a job to do.”

House sends $674 billion defense spending bill to Trump

The first on-time annual funding for the Pentagon in a decade cleared the last congressional hurdle Wednesday with a House vote and now heads to President Trump’s desk.
The president has four days to sign the $674 billion appropriations bill before the end of the fiscal year and avoid another one of the gaps in funding that have plagued Pentagon planners and military forces for years.
Trump has indicated he will sign the legislation, which includes a nearly $20 billion spending increase and is part of a minibus funding three other federal departments — Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.
Trump last week called the spending bill “ridiculous" because it lacks funding for his border wall, which raised worries Trump might reject the bill. But Republicans say they're confident Trump will accept it.

WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton, dressed in a WhatsApp baseball cap and T-shirt, said those words while sitting down with a Forbes reporter in the cafe of the Four Seasons hotel in Palo Alto as part of an interview offering something we rarely get a look at: the deepest inner workings of Facebook, the largest social network on the planet, and just how aggressive it’s become about squeezing every last dime it can out of every channel big and small available to it via directives that come straight from the top.
One of the things you’re left with after reading through Acton’s Forbes interview that’s been rocketing around the web today is that he seems to have at least an element of regret, such as when he laments the fact that “I sold my users’ privacy to a larger benefit.”

Kavanaugh chaos: Democrats are sinking the #MeToo movement in politics. Can it survive?

Kavanaugh: 'This is ridiculous and from the twilight zone'
Judge Kavanaugh responds to the latest allegations from a third accuser.
Sexual misconduct has nothing to do with political ideology, party identification or occupation. It is wrong, regardless of whether it is committed by a Democrat, a Republican, a celebrity, a member of the clergy, a journalist, an executive or someone in another line of work.
Yet in their zeal to do absolutely anything to keep Judge Brett Kavanaugh off the Supreme Court, Democrats are treating unsubstantiated allegations about his conduct in high school and college as the Gospel truth. At the same time, they have forgiven serious sexual misconduct – proven and alleged – by Democratic men many years older and in positions of power.
The #MeToo movement is important and long overdue. No one – male or female, child or adult – should be forced to endure sexual harassment or assault, and all victims should be encouraged to speak up. But if this righteous movement for justice is allowed to be weaponized for the use of one political party it will implode.
Democrats might find the sketchy accusations against Kavanaugh to be politically useful now, but by overplaying their hand they are actually imperiling the #MeToo movement.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., issued requests to interview former FBI Director James Comey, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.
Committee sources confirmed to Politico that the letters of request were sent Friday and Monday for the three high-profile witnesses.
The letters request each witness to arrange a time as soon as possible to testify in the investigation into FBI and Justice Department actions in 2016 and 2017.

Why it was up to Trump to call bull on Kavanaugh allegations

With apologies to Rudyard Kipling, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs . . .” you are Donald Trump. At least that was the case Tuesday.
With Democrats going mad, Republicans going wobbly and the media mob acting like a lynching party, it was left to the president to call bulls–t on the Brett Kavanaugh allegations — and remind the nation of the enormous stakes involved.
On a normal day, in a saner world, Trump’s tough-love speech at the United Nations would deserve our full attention. It was a comprehensive outline of his America First doctrine, but the elephant in the room is that America cannot lead the world when it is unraveling at home.
