UN Expert Tells Facebook Their Definition of Terrorism Is 'Overly Broad'

United Nations Human Rights expert Fionnuala Ní Aoláin wrote a letter to Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg Monday to express concern over the social media giant’s “overly broad” definition of terrorism which, she believes, could be harmful to free speech.
She notes that, in a blog post, Facebook defines terrorist organizations as “any non-governmental organization that engages in premeditated acts of violence against persons or property to intimidate a civilian population, government, or international organization in order to achieve a political, religious, or ideological aim.”
Ní Aoláin explains that “the definition employed by Facebook equates all non-state groups that use violence in pursuit of any goals or ends to terrorist entities. However…only a subset of violent acts committed by a non-state actor can be qualified as terrorism.”
She goes on to explain that Facebook’s overly broad definition could aid governments seeking to silence dissent, violent or otherwise.

Tens of thousands of veterans believe their health has been compromised by the polluting smoke from burn pits on their bases.
EXCLUSIVE – Army Gen. David Petraeus, who was instrumental in guiding U.S. troops during the Iraq War, says that America’s service members should be receiving assistance for the mounting medical issues that they fear have come as a result of being exposed to burn pits while stationed at military bases.
Petraeus, the former commander of U.S. Central Command and Multi-National Force-Iraq, said it’s time for the service members exposed to the dangers of burn pits -- and who say they have been abandoned by the Veterans Affairs Department and Washington – to be provided with proper care.
“It's a sacred obligation,” Petraeus, a retired four-star general, told Fox News during an exclusive interview at his Manhattan office. “And by and large, our country does an extraordinary amount for our veterans and for those who are serving in uniform, and for their families.”

Funerals are a symphony celebrating a person lost to us – Let's please leave politics at the door

In the same month in which Sen. John McCain and Aretha Franklin passed away, my mother also died.
My heart has ached for the family and friends of those legends in a personal way, as my brothers and I arranged for our own mother’s funeral and began the process of making sense of all the items that make up a life, categorizing them, distributing them, selling them, mourning over them and reflecting on the life of a legend in my own family.
It’s the stories of a life that make such horrific moments bearable, I think, as you laugh through the tears of the moment.
Which makes it rather shocking in my view that so many took time from the funerals of great Americans this week to make partisan political points.
There is a lack of courtesy and self-awareness on the parts of too many of the privileged who think that their politics are worthy of the time of the rest of us, no matter the setting.

All politics aside, my mother and these two great Americans are beyond the petty stuff of Earth, so I pray for those left behind, that they are surrounded by people who also miss those gone on and can laugh at the stories.
At times like these, it’s the love we had for those we lost, not who won an election, that should be front and center. Rest in Peace.

Robert Mueller's Russia probe a '6 million-headed monster', GOP lawmaker says

A GOP lawmaker called special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation a "6 million-headed monster" on Sunday.
During an interview on Fox News, Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., said that if the Mueller team is "looking at 17 different things, well, the perception [is] they are looking at 6 million different things. And they created those clouds."
Zeldin said the scope of the Mueller probe, initially created to examine Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between Trump campaign officials and the Kremlin, has "gone so far beyond" what it was created to examine.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday said the U.S. “paid a price” for President Obama’s failure to enforce his “red line” in Syria.
During an interview on “Face The Nation,” host Margaret Brennan began by asking Kerry about a section in his new book, “Everyday Is Extra,” in which he recalls Obama’s handling of Syrian chemical weapons.
“I’m characterizing your re-telling where you went out and you made this prosecutorial, very careful argument about the chemical weapons attacks,” Brennan said.
“What I write about is, we paid a price for the way it played out without the red line being enforced by the bombing,” Kerry replied.

Social media may be too new to know this, but you need to tread lightly when Washington, DC, is looking.
While President Trump has expanded his vocabulary to include “fake social” and “fake search,” last week we had Facebook employees come out against the company for its “political monoculture.”
The calling out of the liberal mindset that is prevalent in Silicon Valley couldn’t have come at a worse time.
Last week’s hearing held by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on how foreign influence operations use social media to spread political propaganda opens the doors for all sorts of new grilling.

If you get your news only from The New York Times, you believe the correct answer is D, neither of the above. Other people know the correct answer is C because they see the leaders of both organizations acting as if the public can’t handle the truth.
