Iran Shootdown of Apache Triggers US Strikes

The U.S. military launched what U.S. Central Command described as "self-defense" strikes against Iranian military targets Tuesday evening after an American Apache attack helicopter was shot down near the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM announced on X that the operation began at 5 p.m. ET in response to the downing of the AH-64 Apache and said additional details would be released as the mission continues.

The retaliatory action came hours after President Donald Trump blamed Iran for the attack and declared that the United States "must, of necessity, respond."

"I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz," Trump said, according to remarks reported by Reuters and Newsmax.

"Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," Trump added.

The helicopter went down Monday near the strategic waterway that carries a significant share of the world's seaborne oil shipments.

Trump said both American aviators survived the incident.

"The pilots are fine," Trump said, according to Newsmax.
